A study conducted in all service sites in the UK shows that Peugeot and Fiat have the most reliable European models. The defect rate is the lowest in the entire automotive spectrum.

A British company has published the results of a large study regarding the level of reliability of the current European models in the UK.

After an analysis of service of all European models on the market between the ages of 3 and 7 years, there were found some surprising results, which largely contradict the popular legends related to car manufacturers on the Old Continent.

Leading the list of cars that are least likely to be damaged is 207, the French model boasting a “defect rate” of only 6% and an average repair cost 331 pounds (375 euros). At the other end of the scale are models that give customers big money, but not up to the level of reliability of cheap cars from the top. Thus, a 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL model has a defect rate of 47% and average repair costs go up to 842 euros.

In the top of the list stand and Range Rover 2002 model (53% / 566 euro), Renault Espace 2002 model (54% / 556 euro), Mercedes-Benz S-Class model 2006 (47% / 573 euro) and BMW 2001 to 2008 model 7 (45% / 583 euro).

According to the study, the rate of defects is not the only factor which was taken into account in determining the rankings. Thus, the reliability of each machine was exposed through an index of reliability (IRR) calculated by pooled analysis of key elements such as maintenance costs, the number of kilometers or, very importantly, the machine age and service costs. IRR index goes from 22 to 207, up from 349 for the Mercedes SL.

The study did not take into account patterns of non-European brands.
